The South African Environmental Observation Network (SAEON) is mandated by the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) to preserve and provide access to earth and environmental observation data for South Africa and so archives any publicly funded data that is captured in this domain, as well as any other data within our remit that we are asked to preserve. SAEON has been active in the development of data management systems, largely funded by National Research Foundation (NRF) and the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI), since 2008. This effort has resulted in a collection of services, tools, and components that are referred to as the ‘Open Data Platform (ODP)’.

SAEON's ODP is tasked with the publication, discovery, dissemination, and preservation of earth observation and environmental data in South Africa. The purpose of the ODP is to promote open science and satisfy funder requirements through the publication of data and scientific evidence. The ODP is a collection of a variety of data sources - distributed as required by data providers and formal sources.

The SAEON Open Data Platform (ODP) is a catalogue of South African earth and environmental observation data. If you would like to submit data to be archived and published in the ODP you can fill in this form or contact the Curation team on curation@saeon.nrf.ac.za if that doesn't suit your needs. Refer to the SAEON ODP Data Submission Guidance page for advice on data formats, formatting and details on the submission process.

Please ensure that you are familiar with the requirements of the SAEON Data Policy as all data submitted to the SAEON ODP falls within its scope. If you are in the project planning phase please refer to the data management planning page.
